Heavy Metal has been around for decades now in a nearly infinite amount of varieties. While some argue that heavy metal is a sacrilegious and blasphemous lifestyle expressed in the form of art; Westerville, Ohio’s The Crimson Armada have set out to prove otherwise. Starting in early 2007, The Crimson Armada came together to go beyond just playing metal by paying tribute to various forms of the heavy style combining their diverse influences and their spiritual messages encrypted within the lyrics. Something that fans who choose to look into the deeper meaning of the lyrics will find uplifting all whilst experiencing The Crimson Armada’s truly heavy style of playing.

Just months after landing their first show, a slot opening for Dead to Fall and As Blood Runs Black, The Crimson Armada kicked it into high gear by recording various demos and sharing the stage with acts such as The Black Dahlia Murder, Catherine, It Prevails, and playing various clubs in Ohio. Shows and recording came to a halt when the group announced a hiatus at the end of 2007 and a farewell show was put together.

After demands from various supporters of the band and the local music scene, The Crimson Armada decided to end their hiatus and announced their reformation and plans to record their first EP, Behold the Architect (recorded with Bobby Leonard of Paper Tiger Studios in early 2008). A comeback/EP release show was booked in April of 2008 and the group was welcomed back to their city with open arms. “A day will come when the dead will rise up from the earth” howled vocalist Saud Ahmed quoting the track ‘Revelations’ off the band’s EP, Behold the Architect. So is it coincidence or what lies ahead?

While many metal and death metal bands of today have a strong focus on sacrilegious and blasphemous matters with an obsession for gore, The Crimson Armada look to be an exception to this rule. The Crimson Armada does this by promoting a positive spiritual message through their music and meaningful lyrics going beyond the trend of broken relationships or pure brutality.

The Crimson Armada spent November 2008 recording their Metal Blade Records debut with Joey Sturgis (The Devil Wears Prada, MyChildren MyBride, Woe Of Tyrants, Brother Von Doom) at The Foundation in Connersville, Indiana. The album, entitled Guardians, perpetuates the band’s philosophy and their technical approach to heavy music.

As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying is an American metalcore band from San Diego, California. Founded in 2000 by Tim Lambesis and having completed their first Line-up in 2001, the band consists of vocalist Tim Lambesis, drummer Jordan Mancino, lead guitarist Nick Hipa, rhythm guitarist Phil Sgrosso, and bassist Josh Gilbert, all of whom are Christians.Signed to Metal Blade Records, As I Lay Dying has released four studio albums, one split album, and one compilation album.
As I Lay Dying's fourth studio album, An Ocean Between Us peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200, and number 1 on the Top Rock chart. The band has performed at Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Soundwave Festival, Sounds of the Underground, Warped Tour, and Taste of Chaos. In 2007, As I Lay Dying won the "Ultimate Metal God" award from MTV2 at the first annual "All That Rocks" special, was named "Artist of the Year" at the San Diego Music Awards in 2008 and was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award for the song "Nothing Left".The band wrote and recorded their latest album, The Powerless Rise on the course of a three year process and was released in May 2010. It has been considered by many to be their best work yet.

Debut and split album (2001–2003)
After leaving the band Society's Finest where he played guitar, vocalist Tim Lambesis formed As I Lay Dying in 2000.Starting out as a duet with drummer Jordan Mancino after they first met as a band in February 2001, the title of the band was taken by the novel of the same name by William Faulkner although there is no correlation between the band's musical theme to the theme of the novel.Pluto Records took interest and offered As I Lay Dying a recording contract. After accepting the offer, one month later the band entered the studio to record their first album Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, which was released in June 2001. In 2002. The band recorded five songs for a split album through Pluto Records, with San Diego heavy metal band American Tragedy. As I Lay Dying realized it needed to expand to a five-piece to include another guitarist and a bassist. Mancino commented "we started going on tour and we needed obviously more people than that."Since they had no "solid" members besides Tim Lambesis and Jordan Mancino, the band recruited friends to perform with them and from there on the group encountered several line-up changes; bassist Noah Chase departed from band in 2001, Brandon Hayes and his subsequent replacement Aaron Kennedy departed in 2003; soon after forming the band The Tokyo Smash in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Frail Words Collapse (2003–2004)
During early 2003, when As I Lay Dying's contract with Pluto Records expired, the band from there undertook realization of their opportunity to pursue other record labels. After extensive touring and an increase in popularity, As I Lay Dying was offered a record deal with Metal Blade Records in March 2003.[10] As I Lay Dying accepted the offer and Pluto Records owner Brian Cobbel was supportive of the band moving to Metal Blade. Lambesis commented "since we've been on the label, they've really gone out of their way to market us differently than they've marketed other bands in the past and have really pushed us as a newer sound for the label."[11]
In July 2003, the band's second studio album, Frail Words Collapse was released. Produced by Lambesis, the album peaked at number 30 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart, and number 41 on the Top Heatseekers chart.[12] William York of Allmusic thought the band "doesn't really add anything new to the mix from a musical standpoint" with the release, although praised it for being "solid enough and well executed, and the production is adequate."[13] Sherwin Frias of Jesus Freak Hideout had similar sentiments and commented "As I Lay Dying didn't exactly break many boundaries in making this record", but praised that each song is "executed so well (and with such precision) that nary a song misses its target."[14] Touring followed to promote the album with the bands Himsa, Shadows Fall, The Black Dahlia Murder, Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Sworn Enemy, and Hatebreed. Music videos for the songs "94 Hours" and "Forever" received rotation on the networks of FUSE and MTV2's Headbanger's Ball.

Shadows Are Security (2005–2006)
As I Lay Dying entered Big Fish recording studio in Encinitas, California in January 2005 to record their third studio album. Shadows Are Security was released in June, and debuted at number 1 on the Independent Albums. It was the band's first release to enter the Billboard 200 at number 35.[12] and sold about 275 000 copies. Wade Kergan of Allmusic called it "one of the strongest releases of 2005," and commented that new guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa, make the band "stronger."[15] Rod Smith of Decibel Magazine commented "Tim Lambesis’ finely honed roar in bittersweet instrumental matrices augmented by occasional clean vocals by bassist Clint Norris . Guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa whip up a melodic cyclone on 'The Darkest Nights'."[16] Guitarist Evan White had quit the band due to personal reasons after his mother had died. All the clean vocals where sung by Dave Arthur of Kings To You, because they sounded in the studio more powerful than Clint Norris'. Guitarist Phil Sgrosso recorded bass on the album, to get the recording finished in the given time.
As I Lay Dying began touring to promote the new record by making appearances at Hell on Earth, Winter Headline Tour, Ozzfest, and a tour with Slipknot and Unearth. The band was on the second stage alongside Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, The Haunted, and It Dies Today. At the fee of $75,000 the band could have chosen to perform on the headliners stage but refused the offer as they thought it was "not worth the money."[17] The band raised its profile in 2006 through its support slot on the Taste of Chaos tour in the US alongside bands such as Deftones, Thrice, Dredg, Funeral for a Friend and Story of the Year.[18] In May 2006, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes and the songs from the split album were re-released as A Long March: The First Recordings through Metal Blade Records. The album contained the original and re-recordings of the songs from the split album, and was released as the band preferred to re-release the material rather than have fans pay large sums of money to listen to early releases. The re-release peaked at number 3 on Independent Albums, and 129 on the Billboard 200.[12] In the summer of 2006 As I Lay Dying closed the Sounds of the Underground Festival.[19] Bassist Clint Norris left the band on good terms in November 2006 with the desire to focus on his marriage. The band auditioned ten bassists, although none proved successful. Lambesis received demo tapes from a band called This Endearing, of which bassist Josh Gilbert was a part of. Lambesis wanted to "sit on it" and wait for the band to record more material. However, This Endearing disbanded and Gilbert was then recruited as As I Lay Dying's new bassist.

An Ocean Between Us (2007–2009)
In 2007, As I Lay Dying started recording a new album titled An Ocean Between Us, which was released on August 21, 2007. Debuting at number 8 on the Billboard 200, and number 1 on the Top Rock chart with first-week sales of 39,000, the album was the highest charting release for the band.[20] Co-produced by Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and As I Lay Dying, and mixed by Colin Richardson, the album received generally positive reviews.[citation needed] Christa L. Titus of Billboard commented "Whatever the differences between As I Lay Dying's personal desires and what its fans demand, this album surely acts as a bridge," praising the song "Comfort Betrays" for its guitar solo.[21] Scott Alisoglu of Blabbermouth.net described the album as "a well-rounded and often thrashy metalcore album, as the band has struck an effective balance between aggression and accessible melodies."Thom Jurek of Allmusic praised the band for expanding its musical range by including melodic choruses and clean vocals such as they had previously done on Confined from Shadows Are Security.It was the first time for bassist Josh Gilbert, to be featured on an As I Lay Dying record, since the time of the departure of previous bassists, Evan White and Phil Sgrosso.
To promote the album, As I Lay Dying performed at the Warped Tour 2007 in August,and toured through Europe in September with Darkest Hour, Himsa, and Maroon.The band was awarded "Ultimate Metal God" by MTV2's "All That Rocks",and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Metal Performance" for the song "Nothing Left". Other nominees included Slayer (who won the award), King Diamond, Machine Head, and Shadows Fall. They played some of the 2008 Warped Tour, as well as the Taste of Chaos UK 2008 Tour with headliners Atreyu.
On April 9, 2009, their DVD This Is Who We Are was released in the Europe. On April 14, 2009, the DVD was released in United States. Almost a month after its release, This Is Who We Are (DVD) was certified Gold in the US.

The Powerless Rise (2009—present)
As I Lay Dying have written 6–7 songs on September 28, 2009 for their new album. On November 23, 2009, Josh Gilbert announced through Twitter that half of the record is recorded. As I Lay Dying announced the title of their new album The Powerless Rise.[28] On May 7, The Powerless Rise was posted in its entirety through MySpace Music. The streaming lasted until May10.[29] The album was officially released on May 11, 2010. The album received generally positive critical acclaim, with one critic saying "Fans of metalcore in general, and As I Lay Dying in particular, will be more than satisfied with The Powerless Rise, as the band's gradual progression and consistency makes this their best album.".

Christian faith
As I Lay Dying have stated on numerous occasions that all of the members of the group are Christians,[31] but never have stated they are a Christian band. When asked if they're a Christian band or Christians in a band, Tim Lambesis stated on the band's FAQ, "I'm not sure what the difference is between five Christians playing in a band and a Christian band.[1] If you truly believe something, then it should affect every area of your life. All five of us are Christians. I believe that change should start with me first, and as a result, our lyrics do not come across very 'preachy.' Many of our songs are about life, struggles, mistakes, relationships and other issues that don't fit entirely in the spiritual category. However, all of these topics are written about through my perspective as a Christian."[1] During an August 2010 radio interview, Lambesis once more made a statement regarding the band and his faith, saying that his world view as a Christian "always comes across in our lyrics in some way or another.".

Bring Me the Horizon

Early years and Count Your Blessings (2004–2007)
Bring Me the Horizon began in 2004 with members of many defunct bands from around their local area.They acquired their name based on a line taken from the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, in which Captain Jack Sparrow shouts "Now... Bring me that horizon."After slightly altering the original line, by simply changing 'that' to 'the', Bring Me the Horizon then became the official name of the band.
They are currently signed to Visible Noise Records, but were originally signed to Thirty Days of Night Records and were the first band to be signed to that label. The band are also signed to Epitaph Records in the US and to Shock Records in Australia. They released their début album Count Your Blessings in October 2006 in the UK and in August 2007 in the United States. They have toured in the past with bands such as Lostprophets, The Blackout; Killswitch Engage and The Haunted. They performed a headlining tour of the UK during March and April 2007 with the now defunct metalcore band I Killed the Prom Queen, whose guitarist would become a permanent member later. They played Download Festival 2007.They also played the North American leg of the tour, including a guest appearance Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes on 6 August in Calgary. He joined Oli in chanting the start of their song "Diamonds Aren't Forever".
In November 2007 they toured on the Australian leg of Gigantour, playing three dates. They returned to Australia in May-June 2008, appearing on I Killed The Prom Queen's final ever tour.
Suicide Season and line-up change (2008–2009)
Bring Me the Horizon had been writing and recording a second studio album over the beginning of 2008. They had been in Sweden recording the album throughout April and May with Fredrik Nordström, who has worked with bands such as At the Gates, Arch Enemy, I Killed the Prom Queen and Dimmu Borgir. The album was released on 29 September 2008. Suicide Season is completely different to previous album Count Your Blessings, having a more metalcore vibe to it, similar to the debut EP release, This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For.[citation needed]
The band recently embarked on their first headline tour of the US, as well as appearing in the 2008 Warped Tour. Bring Me the Horizon are also joined Mindless Self Indulgence, In Case Of Fire, Black Tide and Dir en grey on the Kerrang! and Relentless 2009 UK tour.[citation needed] They are also set to join Thursday, Cancer Bats, Four Year Strong and Pierce the Veil on the Taste of Chaos 2009 North American tour.
It was announced on 27 August 2009 that Bring Me the Horizon will be releasing a remixed version of Suicide Season, titled Suicide Season: Cut Up!, in the UK on 2 November 2009.In an interview with Rock Sound, Oliver Sykes stated that the idea came about after asking a friend to remix one of their songs, and after being very pleased with the end result the band decided to take it a step further and get the whole of Suicide Season remixed. Musicians and producers featured on the album includes Ben Weinman from The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sonny Moore, L’Amour La Morgue (Ian Watkins from Lostprophets), Utah Saints and Shawn Crahan from Slipknot. Sykes also stated that “There’s not a song on there that really sounds like the original. What’s great though is the diversity of each song. There’s dubstep to hip-hop, electro to drum and bass”In March 2009, guitarist Curtis Ward left the band. A number of reasons have been cited for his departure: in an interview, bassist Matt Kean commented that "it became apparent he wasn't enjoying it" and that it was "just about commitment".In May 2009, Jona Weinhofen, formerly of I Killed The Prom Queen and Bleeding Through, joined the band on a temporary basis to fill-in for Curtis. However, it was revealed in July 2009 that he would become an official member of Bring Me the Horizon, partly due to his discontent with living in America, hence leaving Bleeding Through. According to Oliver Sykes in an interview on the subject, Weinhofen has injected the band with a new-found enthusiasm, causing the bands performances to be 'so much better and refreshing', and he feels they have 'stepped up another level'.There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret (2010–present)
In an exclusive interview, Bring Me the Horizon revealed to Kerrang! Magazine that the band's currently planning to write the follow-up to Suicide Season during the summer of 2009, with the plan on going into studio with ex-producer Fredrik Nordström (who produced Suicide Season) in March 2010. The then-untitled third studio album was also set to feature new guitarist Jona Weinhoffen. The band also announced an "unofficial" release date for the upcoming record and that to be of 5th October. The band's frontman, Oliver Sykes, has also stated that the band have been doing "some writing-up and jam cords" during the Vans Warped Tour 2010 tour and that "some records are being mixed-and-blended back in the studio right now". Oli has also announced several "unofficial" titles for the written tracks including "If You're One of Them, Die!", "Bluud", and "You Have the Looks". Later on August 4th, the band revealed to Kerrang! Magazine that the follow-up to Suicide Season will be titled There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret. The upcoming record also sets to feature electropop musician Lights and You Me at Six frontman Josh Franceschi. There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret would also be released via Visible Noise Records (United Kingdom) and Epitaph Records (United States), as of 4 and 5 October respectively.
Controversy

Nottingham incident
While on tour in the United Kingdom allegations were made against vocalist Oliver Sykes that he urinated upon and then assaulted a female fan after a gig at Nottingham Rock City when she allegedly refused his sexual advances. Sykes was subsequently charged with urinating on the fan, but not with physical assault.Online Music Zine Drowned In Sound claimed that Bring Me The Horizon were banned from Nottingham Rock City.However the band's label Visible Noise denied these rumors and the band subsequently played Nottingham Rock City on 1 December 2007.On 13 April, Sykes appeared in Nottingham Magistrates Court on a charge of common assault relating to the alleged urination incident, to which he pleaded not guilty. The case was adjourned until early May.On 3 May 2007 Sykes attended Nottingham Magistrates court for the second time and confirmed his not guilty plea. The case was adjourned again until 17 September.Due to lack of evidence, all charges against Sykes were dropped.The song "No Need for Introductions, I've Read About Girls Like You On the Backs of Toilet Doors" is reportedly about the alleged incident which was released on Suicide Season.
YouTube video with Architects
During a tour, Bring Me the Horizon and Architects filmed a video showing fights between Oliver Sykes and Architects' lead singer Sam Carter. The video was filmed at an all-day event in Karlsruhe, Germany and shows what seemed to be Sam Carter committing acts of physical violence towards Oliver. The video was uploaded onto the online video website, YouTube of which it attracted thousands of hits. This video outraged many Bring Me the Horizon fans causing many people to send hate mail towards Sam Carter.
"We're mates with the guys and were sharing a bus for the whole two week tour!" Carter told Kerrang!. "The fact that people believed it was real is just so ridiculous! We filmed the fight about three times and even added in comedy punch noises and yet kids were still sending us over-the-top hate mail!" Oliver Sykes also commented saying "All-day events can get boring very fast so we conjured up the first idiotic thing we could think of and made it as unbelievable as possible. Sam was getting death threats from kids off MySpace and at the same time getting praised for laying me out! We're sorry if anyone was upset by this although I'm sure most people reading this probably like the thought of me getting a punch in the face!". The issue was later resolved with things returning back to normal.

Prisa pertama kali belajar gitar karena kebetulan. Sewaktu masih SMP, Prisa tinggal di asrama kemudian iseng maenin gitar punya temannya. Gara-gara dimarahin sama yang punya gitar, akhirnya Prisa bertekad balas dendam dengan ikut ekskul gitar. Akhirnya Prisa dan temannya ikut ekskul barengan sambil balapan siapa yang nantinya lebih jago.

Tahun 2005 sampai pertengahan tahun 2006 nama Prisa cukup dikenal di scene underground bersama band metalnya, Zala. Band ini cukup menyita perhatian lantaran isi personelnya cewek semua. Tapi tidak hanya sekedar menjual image saja, skill mereka juga tidak kalah sama band-band cowok. Tahun 2006 bisa dibilang sebagai tahun emasnya Prisa dimana karirnya baik secara pribadi maupun kelompok makin sukses. Secara pribadi, ia terpilih menjadi model untuk portal gitar pertama di Indonesia, Gitaris.com. Ia juga sering disebut sebagai Miss Gitaris.com karena selalu menjadi wakil Gitaris.com di berbagai event dan media. Bersama bandnya, Zala, ia beberapa kali tampil di event metal underground bahkan sampai Java Jazz 2006.

Bulan Juni 2006 kemudian Prisa tergabung dalam band baru bernama Dead Squad. Di band ini ia berpasangan dengan salah satu gitaris dari keluarga Item yang juga merupakan personel Andra & The Backbone, Stevie Item. Kemudian pada bulan Juli Prisa mendapat kehormatan untuk berkolaborasi dengan salah satu maestro gitar Indonesia, Eet Sjahranie dalam penampilan Edane di PRJ. Bersama Edane, Prisa tampil membawakan lagu Cry Out dan Kau Manis Kau Ibliz. Selain itu ia juga dikontrak selama 2 bulan sebagai additional gitaris dan backing vocal untuk ‘band sejuta copy’, Sheila On 7, yang baru ditinggal salah satu gitarisnya. Bersama SO7 sempat tampil di SCTV dalam acara World Cup 2006 dan ikut dalam tour hingga ke Malaysia.

Tahun 2006 Prisa telah memutuskan untuk berhenti dari dunia pendidikan akademis dan memilih untuk terjun sebagai musisi profesional. Langkah yang diambil oleh Prisa untuk masuk ke industri musik adalah merilis album solo perdananya yang beraliran pop. Rencananya album tersebut akan dirilis setelah lebaran tahun 2007. Sebelum albumnya dirilis ia terlebih dahulu tampil sebagai ‘guest musician‘ di album ke-2 J-Rocks sebagai vocalis dan gitaris untuk single Kau Curi Lagi. Prisa juga memiliki side project lain yang ia beri nama Morning Star. Morning Star merupakan project iseng lain Prisa diluar album solonya. Hal ini menjadi pembuktian dari Prisa kalau ia juga mahir dalam permainan gitar akustik.

Bulan Juli 2007 Prisa diendorse oleh pihak Jackson Guitars. Ia dikontrak untuk menggunakan gitar Jackson DKMG Arch Top. Sebuah gebrakan yang sangat fenomenal mengingat ia adalah gitaris Indonesia pertama yang diendorse oleh Jackson.

Evolusi musik

70'an.
Heavy Metal awal 70'an digawangi oleh band-band seperti Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, dan Deep Purple, Heavy Metal pada era tersebut masih dipengaruhi oleh elemen Blues yang kental. Judas Priest mengembangkan genre ini dengan menghilangkan unsur blues dan lebih mengandalkan distorsi, beat yang lebih cepat, dan harmoni. Pada akhir 70'an munculah New Wave oF British Heavy Metal yang dipelopori Motorhead, NWOBHM menggabungkan Punk dan Heavy Metal. Band-band NWOBHM lainya adalah Iron Maiden, Saxon, Venom, Diamond Head, dll.

Awal 80'an.
Awal era 80'an Di gawangi oleh band-band NWOBAM seperti Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Venom dan Diamond Head. Heavy Metal akhirnya bertabrakan dengen musik Pop hal ini memunculkan genre yang disebut Glam Metal, Glam Metal berhasil menerobos chart-chart papan atas, hal ini menyebabkan Heavy Metal lebih tersebar cepat di seluruh dunia.

Underground Metal: 1980, 1990, dan 2000-an.
Thrash metal dan Speed metal.
Tempo lagu sangat cepat yang diusung oleh gitaris yang memainkan gitar rhytm Downstroke pada Thrash metal oleh band-band seperti Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer dan Anthrax yang dijuluki Big Four Of Thrash. Di San Francisco ada Testament dan Exodus di New Jersey ada Overkill dan Sepultura dari Brazil. Sedangkan Speed metal dimainkan lebih cepat sangat-sangat cepat dan bertenaga seperti Motörhead (akhir-akhir), Iron Angel, Anthrax. Sedangkan musik Thrash metal yang berasal dari Eropa adalah seperti, Kreator dan Destruction, keduanya dari negara Jerman.

Death metal.
Pada tahun 1990'an, underground ini lebih memasuki ke Extreme metal seperti Grindcore dipelopori oleh Napalm Death dan Brutal Truth, berkembang pada 1991 menjadi Death metal Scandinavia oleh Entombed, Dismember, Unleashed, dan At The Gates. Melodic Death metal yang berasal dari Gothenburg Swedia lalu berkembang di Finlandia dan Norwegia oleh band-band seperti Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Disessction. Kemudian ada istilah yang digunakan yaitu, Techical metal di pioniri oleh Cynic, Atheist, Meshuggah, Death. Progressive Death metal yang mungkin lebih cenderung ke visualisasi dan banyak menggunakan Tradisional pun dimaklumi, Pionirnya adalah Opeth, Pestilence, Death, Novembre dan mungkin Progressive metal oleh Dream Theater, Queensryche, dan Fates Warning.

Black metal.
Aliran ini muncul sekitar awal dan pertengahan tahun 1980-an, yang diprakarsai oleh band-band cadas seperti Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, dan Bathory. Pada akhir 80-an band Mayhem dan Burzum mengarah kedalam black metal gelombang kedua.

Power metal.
Power Metal adalah genre ini lebih bersemangat dan vokalis genre ini kebanyakan di pengaruhi oleh Rob Halford dan Bruce Dickinson band-band genre ini kebanyakan dari Eropa. Misalnya, Europe (Swedia), Iron Maiden (U.K), Helloween (Jerman).

Doom Metal dan Gothic metal.
Doom Metal adalah aliran yang lebih mengutamakan penekanan lirik, dengan tempo yang dibawah rata-rata subgenre Extreme Metal lainya aliran ini terinspirasi oleh Black Sabbath era pertama, band yang termasuk aliran ini contohnya adalah Saint Vitus, Obsessed dan Candlemass. Gothic Metal adalah evolusi Doom Metal, awal genre ini adalah munculnya band-band Death/Doom dari inggris yaitu My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema, band Gothic Metal sekarang banyak mengandalkan harmoni antara vocal pria dan wanita (kadang-kadang dengan growl).

90'an
Pada era 90'an musik Heavy Metal mulai digoyang oleh munculnya kekeuatan Alternative Rock khususnya Grudge, band-band Glam Metal pada era 80'an mengalami penurunan popularitas, publikasi pada saat tersebut mentitik beratkan pada Grudge. Sementara itu band-band seperti Metallica, Pantera, Tool, White Zombie dan Megadeth menjadi ujung tombak keberadaan musik metal saat tersebut.

Alternative metal.
Alternative metal adalah salah satu subgenre metal yang paling populer di awal 90'an. ketika popularitas Glam Metal mulai tenggelam akibat kemunculan Grudge pada akhir 80an. Alternative Metal digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan band-band seperti Faith No More, Primus, Rage Against The Machine dan Jane's Addiction yang mengfusikan Heavy Metal dan Alternative Rock.
Selain itu ada Industrial metal yang diprakasai band seperti Ministry, Godflesh, Fear Factory dan Marilyn Manson. Industrial metal juga tumbuh pesat di Jerman. band seperti Rammstein ,Oomph!, Megaherz meraih popularitas yang cukup tinggi baik di negara asalnya dan juga dataran eropa.
Lalu ada Punk Metal atau Crossover Thrash adalah percampuran Trash Metal dengan element-element kental dari Hardcore Punk. Suicidal Tendecies, Stromtroopers of Death, Corrosion of Conformity dan Dirty Rotten Imbeciles adalah sebagian band yang mengusung genre ini.
Kemudian ada Groove Metal, adalah evolusi dari genre Trash Metal yang muncul awal 90'an genre ini digawangi oleh Pantera, Sepultura, White Zombie dsb.
Nu Metal, Genre alternative metal yang terakhir adalah metal modern yang bermain dengan nada Industrial. Banyak band-band dari Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Deftones hingga Disturbed.

Grunge.
Tahun 1990-an ketika wabah musik Grunge yang awalnya adalah percampuran kental antara Heavy Metal dan Post-Punk bahkan Hardcore bermunculan di Seattle, walaupun sedikit cenderung ke Alternative rock. Band Grunge dari Seattle, seperti Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, dan Alice in Chains sebelum band itu ada sebenarnya grunge sudah ada oleh band-band seperti Malfunkshun dan Green River setelah itu ada Temple of the Dog Mad Season, Mudhoney sampai Melvins. Setelah kematian Kurt Cobain musik Grunge jarang datang lalu kembali di-ilhami dengan band-band seperti Skin Yard dan PJ Harvey. Jika suatu band memainkan musik Grunge tapi band itu bukan berasa dari Seattle. Nama yang dipakai bukanlah Grunge, tetapi Post-Grunge seperti L7, Stone Temple Pilots, Paw, Hole.

Perkembangan terkini.
Metal di era 2000'an memiliki perbedaan yang cukup besar, dalam artian bahwa metal bisa berfusi dengan berbagai macam aliran. Sebagaimana diketahui para pelopor musik metal, penikmat musik metal disuguhi berbagai macam jenis metal dengan tempo yang harmonis dan dinamis. Beberapa aliran itu adalah Nu Metal,Symphonic Metal , Deathcore, Metalcore, Melodic Death Metal Folk Metal dan sebagainya.

Folk Metal.
Folk Metal adalah fusi Heavy Metal dengan musik folk (musik daerah), aliran ini digawangi oleh band-band sepertik Korpiklaani, Skyclad, Ensiferum, Fiintroll, Turisas dsb.
Walaupun kebanyakan musik Folk Metal lebih banyak berkembang di Skandinavia, Folk Metal juga berkembang di timur tengah seperi Orphaned Land dan Melechesh.

Melodic Death Metal.
Melodic Death Metal sendiri berkembang pesat di Skandinavia, khususnya Gothenburg. Band-band seperti In Flames, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy dan Soilwork. Selain di Skandinavia Melodic Death Metal juga berkembang di regional lain sperti Children of Bodom, Kalmah dan Norther (Finlandia),The Black Dahlia Murder, Darkest Hour and Himsa (Amerika Serikat), Switchblade, Daysend,Infernal Method (Australia),Disarmonia Mundi (Italy), Blood Stain Child (Japan) and Death Scythe (Mexico).

Deathcore.
Deathcore berkembang sebagai turunan dari Death Metal dengan ciri khas lirik yang persis Death Metal, yaitu tentang kematian, neraka, setan, dan nuansa-nuansa mistik. Kebanyakan dari Death Metal adalah orang-orang atheis, sedangkan Deathcore kebanyakan adalah orang-orang agnostik.
Pada mulanya dipelopori oleh band-band seperti Dying Fetus, Suffocation dan Crytopsy dan sebagainya. Pada era 2000'an semakin banyak band deathcore yang bermunculan seperti Job For A Cowboy, The Red Chord, All Shall Perish Bring Me the Horizon dan lain-lain.
Deathcore sendiri cenderung bertempo cepat, hampir mirip aliran metal old school yang bersifat hancur-hancuran namun masih ada grip-grip yang melodian.

New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
New Wave of American Heavy Metal (atau biasa disebut Metalcore) adalah gabungan dari Extreme dengan Hardcore. Genre ini muncul belakangan pada era pertengahan 90'an. New Wave of American Heavy Metal dipengaruhi oleh band-band seperti Machine Head, Pantera dan Biohazard.
Musik metalcore memiliki ciri khas berupa gitar stem drop D sampai C, kadang-kadang full scream, namun ada juga yang equalizer yang biasanya ada dalam reffrain lagu. Biasanya, metalcore dalam hal gitar ritmik tidak serumit death metal namun band-band metalcore kebanyakan bermelodi cadas dan rumit. Jika tidak bermelodi, biasanya ritmiknya yang rumit. Namun nada-nada metalcore tidak seperti death metal yang bernuansa seram, setan, neraka, dan sebagainya.
Band-band metalcore di dunia antara lain Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Darkest Hour, God Forbid, Shadows Fall, Trivium, Haste The Day, Walls Of Jericho,Unearth dan sebagainya.

Mathcore.
Mathcore adalah perkembangan dari Metalcore yang memiliki ritme yang kompleks dan memiliki progressivitas yang tinggi. band-band Mathcore banyak dipengaruhi band-band seperti Converge, Neurosis, Isis, dan The Dillinger Escape Plan. Band-band Mathcore yang baru-baru ini menuai popularitas adalah Protest The Hero, The Human Abstract dan lain sebagainya.
